| Peter Cook would
probably have been the first to admit that dying can be a good career move; none
the less, he would have been pretty revolted at some of the sycophantic rubbish
that has come his way since he died. Widely agreed to have been the funniest
man of his generation, many also see Peter Cook as a sad man who never achieved
his great potential. Who knows? | |
What we do know is that Cook rose through the footlights, with "Beyond
The Fringe", then achieved amazing things with Dudly Moore in "Not Only
But Also". Nothing ever bettered those productive few years - though he equalled
them on occasion. History will also remember Peter Cook as the proprietor
and supporter of Private Eye
magazine; he contributed to that august journal, especially in its early, more
scurrilous years, and gave generously when libel suits threatened to close the
whole operation. This site reveals and reviews some of Cook's Finest Hours,
in television and film. |
